Stressed? Jaw clicking? Headaches? A Night Guard Might Be The Solution!

Do you need a night guard?

I don’t know about you, but I’m 36 years old and I’ve never used a night guard.
I can also tell you that being a  small business owner with 2 little girls at home during the Covid-19 pandemic, I am stressed more than ever.
Jaw and muscle pain, headaches and sore teeth are the norm for the last 10 weeks.
Lucky me, I have a lab to self isolate in and experiment with printing digital night guards.
Since my wife and I are wearing them, our symptoms have disappeared completely!
So, if you have the same question my wife had for me, here are some of the answers…

What is a night guard?

A night guard is an appliance that your dentist may recommend to be worn usually at night that prevents damage that may occur when a person clenches or grinds teeth.
It is a very flexible or slightly flexible appliance that fits on the biting surfaces of your top or bottom teeth.
It can help to prevent excessive wear of teeth.

Who needs a night guard?

A night guard is recommended for patients that experiences signs or symptoms such as muscle pain or wear of teeth.

What are my options? What type is right for me?

There are several different materials that can be used to fabricate a nightguard.
One type is a very soft, cushioned appliance that usually requires little adjustment and is directly placed onto the teeth.
For most people, this type of appliance requires less adaptation.
The second type of material is a thermoflex type. This nightguard needs to be warmed under hot tap water to gain flexibility of the material in order to place it on the teeth. Some people prefer a more rigid fit over the softer material.

What are the benefits for a night guard?

The benefits are prevention of loss of tooth structure due to parafunction. They may also alleviate muscle pain and jaw joint clicking.

How long does a night guard last?

How long a night guard lasts depends on how much you clench and grind at night, as well as which material was selected.
